Find A Mentor Today

Mentors are key to development and growing in the professional world. Whether it be becoming a CEO, carpenter, baker, hair dresser, or blogger, we all need one. If you are new to a professional field, you may be wondering, how do I find a mentor?

How to find a mentor:

Maybe you are looking for a mentor and are not sure where to start in your search. There are some companies or programs that can match you with a mentor but a lot of times it is up to you to find your mentor.

1. Start by knowing exactly what it is you need mentoring on. Maybe you need help with time management, organization, SEO, or Excel. Knowing what you need to begin with, is key to starting your search.
2. Look around you and see if there is anyone right in front of you that is an expert in the area you need a mentor. If there isn’t one, still talk to the people around you and let them know what you are looking for. In one instance, my best budget mentor was recommended to me from someone sitting two offices over. In another instance I had to go online to find a mentor. I usually look around, ask around, then go online.
3. Once you have found someone who might could be a candidate, get to know them. Introduce yourself, find a subject with a common ground of interest, and create a friendship. Get to know this person over some time to make sure they are someone who you can work with.
4. Once you feel comfortable and know them well enough, then ask them about helping you and being your mentor.
5. When you have found a mentor, make sure they fully understand your goals and what you are trying to accomplish. This will ensure you are getting the help you need and leaves no misunderstandings between you and the mentor.

As a mentee, make sure you are open to learning and constructive criticism. If you aren’t open to learning and listening, then you don’t need a mentor. You will be wasting both of your time. The fastest way to turn off someone who is willing to help you and trying to help you is by acting like a know it all.

You may be thinking, but what if I can’t find someone by doing what you outlined above?

Who says a mentor HAS to be a person right in front of you? Have I used actual people to be my mentors before? Yes. Have I used books to be my mentor before? Yes. What about Podcasts. Uh-huh.

See where I am going with this? You don’t HAVE to have a one on one person to have a mentor. Mentors can be found in many different forms. You just have to find someone who is writing, talking about, or creating courses in the area where you need help!
